Prato is one of the most populated city of Tuscany and thanks to its textile heritage, it has conducted lots of migrant streams. The most important is the Chinese one. From the 90’s, the Chinese migration has been incessantly increasing and nowadays the 20% of the inhabitants comes from China.
Every year between January and February, the Chinese community of Prato stages the “Dragon Parade” performed on the occasion of the Chinese New Year. A very long procession accompanies the dragon through the streets of Prato’s Chinatown in order to drive away evil spirits and to bring good luck to people. The dragons are believed to possess qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness.
